My experience of their catering was extremely disappointing. This venue advertises that it is available for functions, conferences, and weddings, among other things. Now I would be reluctant to organise any here. On the positive side, presentation was white fabric table cloth covered tables (although ours was wonky), proper cutlery setting and white service with iced water and glasses. There were what appeared to be fresh ingredients with firm carrot and perky lettuce, crisp chips and battered fish, not oily, and the fruit salad was fresh fruit chunks. The meals were nicely presented. The desert crepe was, like the salad, good. However, on the negative side, in my opinion big bowls of help yourself instant coffee and tea bags are second rate accompaniments to a restaurant meal.
The use of internal space wasn't good. It was very cramped for a venue advertised as catering to functions. The serving staff were leaning across tables instead of serving from behind the diners. And stacking plates at table. This is not just me being snobby, the bad habit has the potential of landing someone else's dinner in your lap or a stack of plates on your head should the waitress slip. Serving meals should not be like dealing cards. I was being treated like I was lucky to be fed at all. The other guests had their food doled out, either fish or kebab, in a similar manner, with no enquiry as to what they might prefer. I saw neighbours swap. If your neighbour didn't want to swap were you stuck with it? It appears so. Moonambel is a long way out of my way, why should I go that far for inferior service when I can have it closer to home?
Nor do I believe my meal was value for money. While my dietary requirements may have been an imposition had I rocked up there without notice, the proprietors had many days (possibly weeks) of advance warning. I expected a proper meal of a similar standard to those other people were having, not something that appeared to be thrown together at the last moment. I was served a deep bowl of white rice with a sloppy topping of what tasted like proprietary pasta sauce with a few added chunks of fresh vegetable.
What makes it worse is that I was supposed to be a guest of a ladies “pamper day” for those of us affected by floods, to give us a break from our troubles and time to be spoiled, instead of feeling neglected. So, how do you think I felt after being fobbed off with peasant swill? The crappy coffee and tea was disappointing especially after having had proper coffee in Beaufort at morning tea time.
Another aspect of the day was to support businesses in the region and showcase what they have to offer. Rainbow/Moonbeam, not good enough. If this was your best effort I am not recommending you.

Eugeniaz1, Wow, you really were not at all happy with such service, nor should you be. It is an unfortunate fact that certain government bodies and aid agencies benefit financially from monies donated by caring Aussies who open their hearts and wallets to the many victims of natural disasters. It is unfortunate that these donors have ‘no say’ regarding specifically ‘how’ their funds will be used. While some natural disaster victims will appreciate the ‘free’ mp3 players, stickers, games nights, dinners, pamper days and bus trips (provided with donor’s funds) many more would prefer physical (and monetary) assistance to help repair damage to home, property, fencing, etc. It is also interesting to note that while Ararat (and district) have been actively using flood recovery money in the afore-mentioned ways, Ballarat appears to have done very little for its residents. Despite this discrepancy, any business paid to provide a service to flood affected individuals (or indeed any other third party), ought to do so in a warm and professional manner. While one can hardly expect a fine dining experience in country areas, basic manners and etiquette should be taught and implemented in all restaurants and at the very least, one should be entitled to choose ones own meal. The means were beautifully presented and good quality. Service was fast and efficient. The staff was pleasant and helpful. Was not overly priced. The setting is warm and inviting with a sense of romance. With candles and beautiful linen to compliment it's enviroment
